Why tech@nyu?
I initially applied to Tech Treks to build my UI and graphic design skills, and after getting in, I met some really awesome people and went for an E-Board spot. Since then, I haven’t looked back!
What's your aesthetic?
I love swiss style fonts and layouts. Even though most of my work is for web, I also take lots of inspiration from old magazines, usually NatGeo but also the New Yorker or music/movie publications.
What do you do outside of work?
I used to swim competitively and picked it back up during my time abroad in Sydney. I love going for hikes and seeing new places. I just bought an old espresso machine and have been having fun making my own coffee drinks. I like watching movies and making videos with my digital camera. I modded a PS Vita and plan on playing all the old Persona games on it.
Favorite tech@nyu event of all time?
The HOF Hacks Hackathon we put on in the spring. It was complete pandemonium and so much fun.
What's your journey into design?
I started at NYU as a Sports Management major, but felt like I wasn’t learning or doing very interesting things (I still love sports though!). I realized that a lot of my favorite side projects had been involved in designing graphics, and from there, I discovered all of the multimedia design disciplines (branding, UI, motion, etc) and switched majors to IDM. My hope is to go into UX/Product Design, but as I’ve learned in college, life is not linear and if you do the right things, new opportunities will manifest themselves.
Advice to your younger self?
Never forget the kid you once were. Those dreams and ideas are all still there, and the world is a big and amazing place that you will never know everything about. Be curious! Use your imagination as much as possible because unimaginative people are miserable and pretty much the worst.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years
I don’t see myself anywhere specific in 10 years, which is kind of frighteningly exciting. I believe in myself to have the drive to find work that can provide for me and that I can be proud of. Hopefully by then I’ll also have a sweet coffee-making and physical media setup.
Favorite tradition/memory from tech@nyu?
We had an awesome end of semester picnic last spring that I remember very fondly.
